How we work

Buying guides versus paid placements: how we research and earn

What our evidence labels mean, how we would earn money, and the rules that keep payouts out of our recommendations.

Most “best of” lists online are built backwards: start from the products that pay the most, then write reasons to buy them. We want this site to work the other way round, and to be checkable when it does not.

Where we stand today

  • We have not hands-on tested any product yet. Every product page says “Manufacturer specs only” or “Unverified”, and every spec links to its source.
  • No link on this site earns money yet. We have not been approved by any affiliate program, and we do not sell anything directly.
  • When that changes, the buttons will say so. A paid link reads “View at [store name]” with a commission note right next to it.

Our evidence labels

LabelWhat it means
Hands-on testedWe used it ourselves, with a written method and dated results.
Independent lab reportA named lab tested this exact product and we read the report.
Manufacturer specs onlyFigures come from the maker or a retailer, cited, unconfirmed by us.
UnverifiedWe could not find a reliable source for key details.

A product can never be labeled higher than the evidence we hold. A manufacturer’s spec sheet does not become “tested” because it is detailed.

How we would earn

  1. Affiliate links. When a merchant such as Rokland, Seeed Studio, OffGrid or Amazon approves us, some buttons will become commission links. You buy from them, they pay us a share, and the price you pay does not change.
  2. Direct sales, later. If we ever sell items ourselves, those buttons will say “Sold by” us, and our own shipping, return and warranty terms will apply.

Each button names who sells the item. There is no combined cart across different stores.

Rules we hold ourselves to

  • Rankings never follow payout. If a product without an affiliate program is the better choice, we recommend it and link to the maker unpaid.
  • Downsides are mandatory. Every product lists what it does not do.
  • No fake urgency, ratings or reviews. No countdown timers, no star ratings we did not earn, no invented testimonials.
  • No invented prices. We show a price only from an approved, current merchant feed. Until then, we show none.
  • Gifts and samples are disclosed on the page where they appear.
  • Corrections are dated. When we fix an error, the guide’s update log says what changed.

Why we disclose this way

The US Federal Trade Commission expects material connections, like commissions, to be disclosed clearly and close to the recommendation, not buried in a footer. Amazon’s Associates program also requires a specific statement on sites that use its links. We will add that statement wherever Amazon links appear, once we are approved.

Independence

We are an independent publisher. Mentions of Project NOMAD, MeshCore, Meshtastic, Amazon, Adafruit and manufacturers describe third-party products and software. They do not imply sponsorship, affiliation or endorsement.
